A crown, which is sometimes called a cap, is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown strengthens & protects the tooth structure when it cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Porcelain crowns are the most popular because they resemble the color of your natural teeth. Porcelain is highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth giving you a natural, long lasting smile.
What are the main reasons for getting crowns:
Tooth has a root canal.
Broken or fractured teeth.
What does getting a crown involve?
Getting a crown usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment here at Palencia Dental will include taking several very accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your own custom crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown that will stay on your tooth for about two weeks until your new crown is ready.
While the tooth is numb, Dr. Kinsey will prepare it by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Once these details are finished, your temporary crown will be placed and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.
When you come in for your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the bite and spacing are correct.
We will give you special care instructions and we encourage you to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
