What is professional teeth whitening?

Most people are familiar with whitening products at the store or online. They usually consist of some sort of whitening strip or gel that you apply to your teeth. Teeth whitening can also come in the form of toothpaste or mouth wash. However, these are not professional teeth whitening products. They’re designed for consumers to use without the supervision of a dental professional.

Professional teeth whitening is teeth whitening administered by a cosmetic dentist. It uses a custom approach for every patient. During a consultation, Dr. Kinsey will show you your tooth’s current shade and help you choose your desired color. Then, she will determine what strength your whitening product needs to be and how long you should use it. The whitening product is a professional strength that you can’t buy in stores.

What really separates professional teeth whitening from alternative solutions is the results. There’s no question whether the teeth whitening will harm your teeth or that your results won’t look good. With Dr. Palencia’s background as a cosmetic dentist, you can expect nothing but gorgeous results.

Causes of Stained Teeth

You might wonder how your teeth became stained, to begin with. It’s not just drinking tons of coffee that can stain your teeth, a number of factors can contribute to stains and discoloration.

  • Foods and Drinks – Coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and chocolate are all known to cause staining.
  • Genetics – You might naturally have darker teeth due to genetics.
  • Smoking and Tobacco Products – Smoking cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco, can all cause intense staining. The stains are from the nicotine, tar, and chemicals in tobacco products.
  • Tetracycline Usage – It was common for doctors to prescribe tetracycline antibiotics in the 60s and 70s. The antibiotic caused severe staining.
  • Poor Oral Health – When plaque isn’t brushed and flossed away from the teeth every day, it can harden into tartar and cause staining. Daily brushing, flossing, and biannual visits to the dentist for cleanings are essential to avoid these stains.

Is Teeth Whitening Right For Me?

So is professional teeth whitening the right treatment option for you? If you’re not sure, start by taking a hard look in the mirror. Are your teeth not as white as you want them to look? Do you hide your teeth because you feel embarrassed by their color? If you answered yes to either of those questions, teeth whitening is the right solution for you! We also recommend teeth whitening to people who have tried over-the-counter whitening products and felt dissatisfied with their results.

To qualify for professional teeth whitening, you need to have good oral health and be free of cavities and gum disease. If your oral health isn’t the best, our St. Augustine cosmetic dentist will work with you with treatments to improve your oral health. We also don’t recommend teeth whitening to patients who have restorations like porcelain veneers, dental crowns, dental bridges, or dental bonding at the front of their teeth. Unless surrounding teeth are not as white as the restorations. This is because restorations do not respond to whitening treatment.

In severe cases, we may recommend porcelain veneers or dental crowns to achieve your desired results.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

How long does teeth whitening last?

Professional teeth whitening helps remove existing stains and typically last several years, but through consumption of coffee, smoking, or just through natural aging, your teeth can eventually become discolored again. Maintenance whitening is an easy way to help combat recurring discoloration and bring back your brighter whiter, healthier-looking smile.

How much is teeth whitening?

Your teeth whitening treatment’s cost will depend on how severe your staining is. Please book a consultation to learn more.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes! One of the biggest reasons we recommend professional teeth whitening over store products is that it’s completely safe. Dr. Kinsey whitens your teeth with only the safest methods involved.

Do teeth whitening strips work?

Yes and no. Teeth whitening strips from the store can whiten your teeth. However, they come with a few drawbacks. For one, if they’re left on your teeth too long, they can cause permanent enamel damage. They can also cause severe tooth sensitivity. Since there is no way to protect your gums, the strips often rest against the gums and cause damage there too. Lastly, the strips don’t always provide even results. One section of your tooth might appear whiter than another.
